Quick answer
- Most recliner dirt hides in the mechanism, footrest gaps, hinges and the deep seat crease.
- Unplug power recliners at the wall and never wet the motor, controls or wiring.
- Fabric recliners get shampoo and extraction; leatherette and rexine are wiped, never soaked.
- Cleaning cannot fix peeling PU leatherette; conditioning only slows wear on real leather.
- KaamGenie recliner cleaning is Rs 599 per unit plus GST, including mechanism and hinge detailing.
Why recliners need a different kind of clean
A recliner is the seat that gets used the most in many Delhi NCR homes. It is where someone watches the evening match, naps after Sunday lunch, eats dinner in front of the TV and sips chai in winter under a shawl. That heavy daily use, combined with moving parts, footrests and deep gaps, means a recliner collects far more hidden dirt than an ordinary sofa seat of the same size.
The problem is that most of that dirt is not visible. You can wipe the armrests and vacuum the seat cushion and still leave crumbs, dust, coins, pet hair and spilled snacks packed into the mechanism underneath. A proper recliner clean has to open the chair up, work into the gaps and hinges, and deal with the fabric or leatherette on top, all without damaging the mechanism or the electrics.
Manual vs motorised recliners
Manual recliners use a lever or a push-back action and a spring-and-steel linkage under the seat. Motorised or power recliners add an electric motor, a control panel or buttons on the side, a power adaptor and wiring that runs under the frame, and some newer models also have USB charging ports and cup holders. Both types hide dirt in the same places, but power recliners need extra care because water and electrics must never meet.
Where dirt hides in a recliner
When our crew opens up a recliner that has not been deep-cleaned for a year or two, the same spots are almost always the worst.
- The mechanism under the seat: everything that falls down the sides ends up on the steel linkage. Crumbs, dust bunnies, hair and sometimes small toys or TV remotes collect here, and food debris can attract cockroaches and ants.
- Footrest gaps: the gap between the seat front and the footrest opens and closes every time the chair reclines. It traps lint and crumbs and, with leg contact, picks up a lot of body oil and sweat.
- Hinges and pivot points: dust mixes with the light grease on hinges to form a dark, sticky paste that can make the chair creak and feel stiff.
- The seat-to-back crease: on recliners this crease is deeper than on a normal sofa because the backrest moves, so it holds a surprising amount of debris.
- Headrest and armrest tops: hair oil, sweat and hand grime build up here and turn fabric dark and leatherette sticky.
- Cup holders and side pockets: sticky residue from spilled drinks and forgotten wrappers.
If anyone in the house has noticed itchy bites after sitting in a recliner, the seams and the underside are also exactly where bed bugs like to hide. Cleaning removes debris but does not kill an infestation; our guide on bed bugs in a sofa explains the signs and what treatment is actually needed.
Safety first: unplug and keep water away from the motor
This is the part that DIY cleaning videos often skip. Before doing anything on a power recliner, bring it to the upright position, switch it off at the wall and unplug the adaptor. Do not rely on the chair simply being "off". Then follow a few simple rules:
- Never spray liquid directly onto the side control panel, buttons, USB ports or the area above the motor. Apply cleaner to a cloth instead.
- Never wet the motor or wiring. Moisture that drips down into the frame can corrode connections or trip the adaptor, and repairs on power recliners are expensive.
- Keep fingers and hands away from the scissor linkages. Even manual mechanisms can pinch hard if the footrest is pushed or the chair shifts while you are reaching underneath. Ask someone else not to operate the chair while you clean it.
- Keep children and pets away during cleaning and until the chair is dry.
- Let it dry fully before plugging back in and using the motor again.
Professional crews follow the same rules, and on power recliners we use controlled, low-moisture extraction around the base and keep cleaning solution well away from the electrics.

Fabric recliners vs leatherette and rexine recliners
Fabric recliners
Fabric recliners are cleaned much like a fabric sofa seat: thorough dry vacuuming, pre-treatment of stains, foam shampoo with gentle agitation and wet-vacuum extraction to pull the dirt and most of the moisture back out. The difference is the extra attention to the footrest panel, the deep crease and the underside. Headrest grime and armrest darkening usually lift well. Very old food or drink stains can lighten a lot but may not disappear completely. For tough spots on the fabric, the steps in our guide to removing stains from a sofa are a useful first aid before a professional visit.
Leatherette, rexine and leather recliners
A large share of recliners sold in India, especially in the budget and mid-price range, are covered in leatherette, PU (polyurethane) or rexine rather than real leather. These surfaces are never soaked. They are wiped with a mild, pH-safe cleaner on a microfibre cloth, with a soft brush used on textured areas and stitching, then dried. Body oil on the headrest and armrests is the main thing to remove, because it makes the surface sticky and attracts dust. Genuine leather recliners also get a conditioner afterwards to keep the hide supple.
The honest truth about peeling leatherette
We get many calls asking us to "fix" a recliner whose seat or headrest has started flaking into small black or brown bits. This is peeling PU or bonded leather, and it is important to be straightforward about it: cleaning cannot fix peeling leatherette.
PU and bonded leather are a thin plastic coating on a fabric backing. Over time, body heat, sweat, hair oil, sun and the dry Delhi winter break down that coating, and once it starts lifting there is nothing to put back. A cleaner or conditioner will not re-attach it, and scrubbing can actually loosen more flakes. What a clean can do is remove grime and oils so the remaining surface is not degraded further, and stop the sticky feel. Once peeling is widespread, the real options are reupholstery or a fitted cover.
Real leather behaves differently. It is a natural hide that dries out rather than delaminates, and regular conditioning genuinely slows drying and cracking. If you want to know more about why leather and faux leather crack and what you can do early, our guide to preventing leather sofa cracking covers it in detail.
How a professional recliner clean works and what it costs
A KaamGenie recliner clean is done at your home. The crew brings a commercial vacuum, a wet-extraction machine, upholstery tools and the right cleaning products for your recliner's material, and lays a sheet to protect the floor.
- Inspect and patch-test on a hidden area, and identify fabric, leatherette or real leather. Power recliners are unplugged.
- Recline and open the chair carefully to reach the footrest panel and the mechanism.
- Vacuum into the mechanism, hinges, footrest gaps, the seat-to-back crease and under the seat, removing debris that has been building up for months.
- Detail the hinges and gaps with brushes and crevice tools, wiping away the sticky dust paste on reachable metal parts without soaking anything.
- Clean the upholstery with shampoo and extraction for fabric, or a gentle wipe-clean for leatherette, followed by conditioning for real leather.
- Groom, dry and check the recline action before handing over.
Recliner cleaning is priced at ₹599 per unit (GST extra), which includes the vacuuming into the mechanism and the hinge and gap detailing. If you have a recliner sofa set, such as a 3-seater with two reclining ends, tell us on the call how many seats recline and what the cover is, and the quote will reflect exactly that. Your quote is confirmed on the phone and does not change on arrival. You can estimate your total with the sofa cleaning cost calculator or book directly through our sofa cleaning service anywhere in Delhi NCR.
Keeping it clean between visits
Vacuum the crease and under the footrest every week or two with a crevice tool, wipe the headrest and armrests with a dry microfibre cloth, keep food in a tray rather than on your lap, and drape a washable towel over the headrest if anyone uses hair oil. On a power recliner, check occasionally that nothing has fallen onto the wiring under the frame. A professional clean every 6 to 12 months keeps the mechanism free of buildup and the upholstery fresh.
Frequently asked questions
How much does recliner cleaning cost in Delhi NCR?
KaamGenie charges Rs 599 per recliner unit, plus GST. That includes vacuuming into the mechanism, hinge and gap detailing and cleaning the upholstery. For a recliner sofa set, tell us how many seats recline and the quote is confirmed on the phone. The minimum booking is about Rs 999.
Is it safe to clean a power recliner at home?
Yes, if you bring it upright, switch off at the wall and unplug the adaptor first. Never spray liquid onto the controls, ports or motor area; apply cleaner to a cloth instead. Keep the wiring dry, and let the chair dry fully before plugging it back in and using the motor.
How do I clean under a recliner footrest?
Unplug a power recliner first. Recline the chair or raise the footrest, then vacuum the gap and the panel underneath with a crevice tool. Keep your hands clear of the scissor linkage and make sure nobody operates the chair while you are reaching in. Wipe metal parts with a dry cloth.
Can peeling leatherette on my recliner be repaired by cleaning?
No. Peeling PU or bonded leather is a coating that has broken down and lifted off its fabric backing, and no cleaner or conditioner can re-attach it. Cleaning removes oils so the surface degrades more slowly, but widespread peeling needs reupholstery or a fitted cover.
Why does my recliner creak and feel stiff?
Often it is dust and debris mixed with grease on the hinges and pivots, forming a sticky paste. A thorough vacuum and detailing of the mechanism frequently improves the movement. If the creaking continues after cleaning, a bent linkage or worn part may need a furniture technician.
How long does a recliner take to dry after cleaning?
A fabric recliner cleaned with shampoo and extraction is usually touch-dry in about 4 to 6 hours and fully dry by the next morning, faster with a fan running. Leatherette and leather recliners are wiped, not soaked, so they are ready to use almost immediately.
Can I use a fabric shampoo on a rexine recliner?
It is not a good idea. Rexine and PU need a mild, pH-safe cleaner on a damp cloth, not foaming shampoo or a soaking method. Harsh soaps, sanitiser and strong household cleaners dry out the coating and can speed up cracking and peeling. Always wipe dry afterwards.
How often should a recliner be professionally cleaned?
For most homes, every 6 to 12 months is sensible because recliners get heavy daily use and the mechanism collects debris quickly. Homes with pets, small children or someone who eats in the recliner regularly may need it closer to every six months.
Do you clean recliner sofa sets and single recliner chairs?
Yes. KaamGenie cleans single recliners, two-seater and three-seater recliner sofas and corner sets, both manual and motorised, in fabric, leatherette and real leather. The crew cleans at your home across Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Greater Noida.
Will cleaning a recliner get rid of bed bugs?
No. Vacuuming removes some bugs and eggs from seams and the mechanism, but it does not end an infestation. Bed bugs need a proper pest treatment. KaamGenie offers bed bug treatment as a separate service, and the recliner can be cleaned once the treatment is complete.
