Why Delhi homes need their water tanks cleaned

Delhi water comes from a mix of sources — DJB supply, borewells, and tanker deliveries. Each one carries its own load of sediment, mineral deposits and bacteria into your tank. Best time for water tank cleaning in Delhi: 2026 seasonal guide

Right now (post-monsoon, September to November). This is the single most important window of the year. The monsoon has just pushed extra silt, organic matter and bacteria into overhead tanks and underground sumps across Delhi, and the warm, humid air that lingers into October lets algae and biofilm keep blooming on tank walls. If your tank has not been cleaned since before the rains, book a post-monsoon clean now: September through early November is when we see the heaviest sludge and the most complaints about foul-smelling or slightly cloudy water across South, West and East Delhi.

Summer (April to June). Peak demand and peak risk. High temperatures accelerate bacterial growth, and heavier borewell and tanker use in dry pockets like Sangam Vihar, Chattarpur and parts of Dwarka drops more sediment into storage. A pre-summer clean in March keeps water safe through the hottest months.

Winter (November to February). Growth slows in the cold, so this is the calm season, but sediment already sitting at the bottom of the tank does not go away on its own. Winter is the ideal time for societies and RWAs to run their annual contract clean, since staging tower-by-tower is easier when demand is lower.

How long does the cleaning take?

For a typical 1000-litre overhead tank, about 90 minutes from when our crew rings your doorbell to packing up. Underground sumps in kothis take 2-2.5 hours. Society shared tanks (5000+ litres) take 3-4 hours.

Do I need to be home?

Not necessarily. If the tank is on a rooftop or in a shared society area, we can coordinate with the building owner or RWA representative. For tanks inside individual homes, someone needs to provide access.

What chemicals do you use?

Only food-grade disinfectants approved for drinking water systems. We do not use harsh industrial chemicals that can leave residue. The tank is rinsed thoroughly after disinfection.

How often should I get this done?

Every 4-6 months for DJB-supplied tanks, every 3-4 months for borewell-fed tanks. Restaurants and food businesses should clean quarterly to stay FSSAI-compliant.

Will I lose water service for the day?

No. We empty just enough water to clean and refill quickly. Most customers don’t notice any disruption.

Do you clean both underground sumps and overhead tanks?

Yes — rooftop plastic and Sintex overhead tanks, RCC underground sumps, and full society tank farms. Most homes book the sump and overhead together in one visit so the whole storage system is cleaned at once.

What chemicals do you use to clean a water tank, and what are they called?

The main cleaning agents are food-grade sodium hypochlorite (the same chlorine used to disinfect drinking water), a little potassium permanganate to lift stubborn organic staining, and a mild non-toxic detergent for scrubbing the walls and base. All three are approved for potable water systems, dosed to safe residual levels, and rinsed out fully before we refill, so nothing harmful is left behind. We do not use harsh industrial acids or solvents.

Why are there red worms in my water tank?

Those red worms are almost always bloodworms, the larvae of midge flies, and they appear when sludge and organic matter have been sitting at the bottom of the tank while a cracked lid or an open overflow lets flies lay eggs on the water surface. They are a clear sign the tank is overdue for cleaning and should not be used for drinking until it is done. We drain the tank completely, scrub out the sediment they breed in, disinfect with food-grade chlorine, and seal the gaps so they do not come back.
