An underground sump is the large water tank built into the ground — usually under the front lawn, driveway, or basement of a kothi (independent house). It receives water from your DJB connection or borewell pump, and the booster pump sends it up to your overhead rooftop tank. Cleaning it is harder than cleaning an overhead tank for one big reason: it’s a confined space.

Why your underground sump probably hasn’t been cleaned in years

Most people forget about their sump. It’s out of sight, the lid is heavy, and the booster pump quietly does its job. Meanwhile, sediment from years of supply water has settled at the bottom — sometimes 6 inches or more in older houses. Algae has grown on the inside walls if there’s any light leak. And if the sump shares a wall with a soak pit or septic tank, you might have contamination seeping in slowly.

1. Pre-inspection — we open the lid, check the depth, check for cracks, and decide if 2-person or 3-person crew is needed.
2. Ventilation — lid stays open for 15-20 minutes to release any trapped gases. Critical safety step.
3. Pump-out — remaining water is pumped out using a dedicated dewatering pump. Goes to your drain or garden as you prefer.
4. Sediment removal — the crew member who enters scoops out the sludge layer manually into buckets passed up to the second crew member. This is the part untrained operators skip — it makes all the difference.
5. Manual scrub — food-grade brushes on all walls and floor. Special attention to corners where biofilm accumulates.
6. Jet wash — high-pressure water jet to flush remaining particles. Wastewater is pumped out continuously.
7. Anti-bacterial rinse — food-grade hydrogen peroxide or chlorine solution, 15-minute contact time (longer than overhead because sumps have more biofilm surface area).
8. Final rinse + refill check — clean water flush, then we test the booster pump to make sure it’s pushing clean water up to your overhead tank.

Total time: 2-2.5 hours for a standard 5000L sump. Larger 10000L+ kothi sumps take 3-4 hours.

Why is sump cleaning more expensive than overhead? Three reasons: 2-person crew minimum (one inside, one safety lookout), specialised dewatering pump rental, and longer cleaning time (2.5x vs overhead). Anyone quoting you <₹1000 for sump cleaning is either using just 1 person (unsafe) or skipping the sediment removal step.

Should you clean the sump AND the overhead tank together?

Yes — always. Here’s why: your booster pump moves water FROM the sump TO the overhead tank. If you only clean the overhead, any sediment in the sump immediately gets pumped right back up — defeating the entire purpose. We strongly recommend combined cleaning whenever the sump is on the property.
