What to do while you wait for the crew

Between your booking call and the crew arriving, a few simple steps protect your family and make the cleaning more effective:

1. Stop drinking and cooking with the tank water. Switch to stored water you already had, or buy bottled. This is the single most important step if the water looks or smells wrong.
2. Switch off the motor and pump. If you keep pumping, you draw more contaminated water down into your building’s lines and taps. Turning it off limits how far the problem spreads.
3. Don’t add bleach or chemicals yourself. Dumping hardware-shop bleach into the tank can leave residue that’s unsafe to drink and doesn’t reach the sludge where the real contamination sits. Leave the disinfection to the food-grade process.
4. Bathing and floor-washing water is usually fine. Unless there’s a dead animal or heavy contamination, the existing water can still be used for non-drinking purposes — just keep it away from your mouth.
