Naraina runs two lives side by side — Naraina Vihar’s DDA flats and plotted blocks under settled RWAs on one flank, and the industrial area and village on the other, where crowded rentals share plastic tanks. Iron dust is chemically active in water. Where cement dust sits inert and sawdust rots, iron particles oxidise — each fill that carries them in leaves a little more dissolved and particulate rust, which settles as a soft brown mud and simultaneously stains the plastic it rests against. On a translucent wall the stain shows through, which is why Naraina owners often notice the tank browning before they notice the water. Once bonded, the stain needs deliberate contact scrubbing; no amount of draining and refilling shifts it.
The two halves of the colony load their tanks differently. “Our tank has browned so much you can see it from outside. Can that be cleaned off?” Usually, yes. The brown is a rust stain bonded to the inner wall, and it responds to patient soft-pad scrubbing — not to rinsing, which is why it survives ordinary cleans. Long-set stains may not lift to factory-white, but the before-and-after photos will show a dramatic difference, and the water stops picking up the tint.
“Is rust-tinted water dangerous to drink?” Iron itself in these traces is more unpleasant than toxic — metallic taste, staining on clothes and fittings — but the sediment bed it forms harbours bacteria, and that is the genuine hygiene issue. Cleaning removes both the tint’s source inside the tank and the bed it builds. The certificate documents the disinfection.
